Ifeanyi Udeze has expressed sadness following the death of his former Super Eagles head coach and legendary national team captain Christian Chukwu.
Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman”, died earlier on Saturday at the age of 74.
Reacting to the news of Chukwu’s death, Udeze told Completesports.com:”I Was at the clinic with my daughter, because she is not feeling well, When I got a call that my chairman has passed on, it’s crazy.
“I’m just sad right now.”
Born in Enugu, Chukwu began his career with Enugu Rangers, and led them to both local and continental success, which include the now defunct African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977.
He captained the Nigerian national team known then as the Green Eagles to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980 on home soil, defeating Algeria 3–0 at the National Stadium in Lagos.
He later went into coaching, and led the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.
Also, he served as assistant to Clemens Westerhof when the Super Eagles won the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia as well as qualifying for the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
