Major League Soccer (MLS) club Seattle Sounders FC suffered a 2-1 defeat to Botafogo in their Group B opener of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at Lumen Field.
The reigning Brazilian league and Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League) winners took a two-goal lead by halftime.
Jair Cunha powerfully nodded home in the 28th minute, and Igor Jesus’ header doubled his team’s advantage in the 44th minute.
Seattle pulled a goal back with 15 minutes left when midfielder Cristian Roldan reacted quickest to a recycled set piece, sending a deflected header past Botafogo goalkeeper.

Sounders will hope to bounce back from the opening day disappointment when they will face La Liga giants Atlético Madrid on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, Botafogo will have their hands full when they face Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)
Diego Simeone’s side had a disappointing start to the competition after falling to a 4-0 defeat to European champions PSG on Sunday.
Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Vitinha made it 2-0 in the first minute of first half stoppage time.
With three minutes left in the game Senny Mayuku added the third goal for PSG while Lee Kang-in completed the rout by netting the fourth goal in the 97th minute.
